The BeNOW TV Project was developed over several years by Andrew Taylor. The web framework itself uses

The Repository API for object persistence and retrieval from JDBC databases, including the excellent Firebird and Apache Derby databases.
The Service API for defining, accessing, invoking and publishing of processing.
The XML API for automatic transformations of objects to and from XML
The Security API for management of users, groups, roles and permissions.
The Task API for instigation and monitoring of long running tasks.
The Java and Util projects for various functionality.

Comskip for commercial detection

LIRC for infrared remote control
XMLTV for listings from Schedules Direct (and Tribune Media) and potentially others
was originally developed to capture (and circumvent nonsense) from Starchoice/Shaw Digital Direct (who should lower their prices, foster channels and allow direct digital capture, already)
runs on Linux and uses many of the GNU tools
and is written in the excellent, if large and verbose, Java Language

The BeNOW TV Project is an open source project which relies on blood, sweat, tears, parallel kind employment and the very infrequent donation.
